aside from the film just being amazing, one thing i really enjoyed about the cinematography was the use of the very limited palette of blues/grays/browns in all the current situation scenes. with the flashbacks in very vibrant warm colors to contrast better times.

anyway, blahblahblah- here's me trying out that cooler palette on this very small paper- 5x11 watercolor on 300lb softpress

again, an amazing piece of work, and aside from it being obviously depressing- it's actually holds very optimistic values. also, it reminded me much of Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies ( in some parts).

little Batman and Detective Annuals

Hey Everyone!

so we've finally managed to get this project rolling a bit! The great folks over at DCU blog showed us some love this morning, then newsarma and CBR gave us a bit more press, and i'm hoping it starts spreading like the rage virus ( been watching a lot of 28 days, weeks.. hopefully months soon.)

anyway- back in July of 2008, i did this piece of all my favorites from the Gotham City cast and got great feedback, so i decided to pursue it. DC is awesome.

Next month, I team up with my long time friend Derek Fridolfs and also artist/writer who inks our Batman: Streets of Gotham- to bring you guys- Little Gothams! We will have two, 2 page stories in each of the annuals out that month. One called Off Rogue Racing, from above and one titled Questions and Answers, from below. I know- not really HUGE stories, but then they are not really HUGE characters haha.

And to answer the one question everyone including people internally ask-

NO, they are NOT kids. Why do they look that way? Because the stories we want to tell aren't all that serious- they are fun, whimsical, light hearted, and very all ages friendly. Derek and I both have a huge love for the animation and stories we grew up with, and the majority of it will be homage back if not referencing back to those- with a twist of our own. With that, i figure i can take the style to something a bit more fun and whimsical as well. Obviously im not the first to do this style, but its a style i do enjoy drawing in at times when i am done drawing mature readers books and murder mysteries for the night. My kids also enjoy seeing them a lot, and its something i can share with them at the end of the day.

so as they say- carpet denim! Thanks for looking everyone, please give it a shot next month.

my first shot at Huntress on a cover, i've not been keeping up wiht her lately, so was given reference for the costume. i can hear fans everywhere complaining to no end already. Manbat was a first as well, but he's been wearing the same thing since the 80's right? or 70s? painted it at the same time as my hellboy/batman piece so i went with the similar sky color scheme. force of habit i guess.

1- normally for a cover, i work with a collaborative with the writer ( in this case, mr paul dini) and our editor. I normally shoot out about 2-4 sketches roughed in photoshop if i have time.

sometimes i give one sketch if we're crammed or im really set on one idea (like in the case of this one- http://duss005.deviantart.com/art/batman-in-wonderland-76344595 ).

This time around, Paul actually sent in a picture he took of himself holding a knife included with a video clip of an old b&w movie to give the perfect feeling of the characters mood and gestures. it was dead on what we wanted to get across i felt. but still, keeping things open, i tried a few other layouts. none was as effective as paul's, and i knew it. so i went with #1.

2- i do a cleaner linework i can use. blow it up to 12 x 18 and trace it over to 300lb softpress paper ready to paint.

3- using liquid masking, i cover up everything but the background. i went with a simple dripping blood red so that the background provides enough for the character's mood, but not to overpower it with useless details. his expression and gesture shoudl be most important and nothing else.

4- removed the masking and going forward to paint in the main character, im horrible with painting a likeness and making stuff look real, so i rarely even try. plus if i wanted realism, i'd take a picture, watercolor is fun because it paints itself.

5- i come back with color pencil and ink and add in all the scar marks that Zsasz uses to tally up his kills. real scar marks will not be this dark, scar tissue leaves a pinkish purple tone and most the time way lighter. In this character, i felt it was more striking to show the markings than to make it "real" real. plus with as many cuts as he has, pinkish purple woudl make him look more diseased than dangerous crazy.

6- i add in batman's shadow using photoshop, it doesn't completely wrap around him like in a real photo, but it works well without warping too much of the silhouette so you can tell its batman.

i was very tempted to do another layer of paint to use for the shadow, but there were so many textures and linework going on already, i felt one more layer of paint would come off more as texture rather than a casting shadow.

also- at this stage, i readjust the colors scanned into photoshop which is why it looks darker than the previous.

* ive found the best way to scan watercolor if you cant photograph it is to scan in full color, create a duplicate of it and set that layer to multiply. all the colors you've lost through the light shooting right thru your transparent watercolor should not be back without leveling or using your curves. hope that answers any questions about that part.

if you're a fan of batman like myself, you either have already heard of this site or shoudl head there now. even if your just the casual pin collector at shows, or cosplay for no reason by to strut your stuff, or just into the animated series and forward, this site is still fun as hell and has something for everyone. i visit pretty often just to see what i've missed in the batworld.

working on a tight schedule and in recluse all day, all month, you'd be amazed how out of touch some of us artists really are. you'd think because i work in comics, i'd know everything there is to know and all major happenings and events.

truth? most of us know what's GOING to happen, but just not how. I keep up with most batman bbooks to know, but half the time, im more behind than most readers. sure they told us about grayson being batman over a year ago, but i just found out last month it happened. yes. lame.

anyway, on the site, i ran across this old interview of michael keaton around the opening time of Tim Burtons' first Batman-

i loved the latest dark knight, i totally dig Bale as batman and Ledger as joker, but somethign about Keaton made me really really liek him as batman. He totally embraces the role and i felt like he was a true fan of the character either before or after. doesnt matter. the dude is funny as hell and you can tell he loves being batman.

Hey all, just wanted to drop a few things out there-

so this cover is special to me for many reason.

originally, i thought this was a trade paper back, i could still be wrong, but hopefully im not. It is announced as a hardcover. i did this cover about 4 months ago, it collects our first ( dini, derek, and myself ( plus mr milligan guest stars!) 6 issues of our run- special to me #1.

it was way fun and WAY cool for DC to actually ask me do an entire new cover for our collection. i think before, we were just using art from previous issues. And with trades and hardcover, i get to put the logo on anywhere i wants, so i chose the floor. special to me #2!

and finally, with this cover and the next one for issue 850, i would have done 12 detective covers so far this year! woohoOO! and its only august! my personal goal for the longest was to be part of Detective Comic's continuum for at least 12 issues straight- while providing my own covers. if all goes well, i might hit that mark this year. so theres potential "special to me #3" ( but i think batman or something hahah- 11 issues and a hardcover aint bad!)

MORE batman mini dudes, 28 of them i'm counting. the batmobile counts as a character.

im sure the costumes are all way off and some are more deformed than others. but for some reason, i have no problem improvising costumes and features for Gotham characters. i figure if they looked cool to me, that was fun enough. unlike the marvel one i did here, where i actually had to go out to look for costumes and ref what they kinda look like.

also, i actually tried to do a step by step of this that i'll post as soon as i get more time.

Detective comics #846 is out today, it kicks off our 5 issue arc with the return of HUSH where Dini REALLY digs into the character. I think readers will love it. Besides that, expect tons of cameos and guest stars from both the rogues gallery and the "Bat-Family".

Here's two pages where i got to get my hands dirty and jumped in on inking a few backgrounds. If you dig it, thanks- i did it!

It's been pretty difficult for me to switch gears from penciling/paneling interiors to watercoloring a cover every few weeks. i try to do these warm up exercises in between for myself to get my mind set in the right place the night before starting a new cover. This took about 2-3 hours to do, it doesn't sound like a lot of time, but 2-3 hours is hard to come by these days. I think if i did nothing but paint covers every month, i'd get into a groove and it'd be relatively easy- not to mention get folds better at it.

Truth is i could never be just a cover artist.
1) no one will give me that much work in a year hah!
2) i know i'd never be happy. i love drawing comics too much. not just splash pages or covers- but panels and borders, sequences and scenarios.

i love giving characters emotions and gestures, telling stories from panel to panel, making shots work with the word balloon, making the readers eye move along the page. Its something i have to do to consider myself really "drawing" a book. I am certain every true comic artist out there knows what i mean. that and i have to do it monthly. there's a certain rush of excitement knowing you're telling a different story with every page( yes, every page- not every book), and its makes you not want to get up from the table till its done.

penciling 22 pages a month, though, where you know that your inker will work over it gives you a sense of looseness and security at times, other times i tend to go TOO tight to make sure it translates well for the inker and colorist in the next step.

But, when i watercolor, i have to change that frame of mind and process so making sure to work the steps in moderation so that the end results can come together more cohesively. Again, it doesnt sound like a lot of work, but i lose a lot of steam everytime i switch gears.

the actual painting part for me is pretty relaxing once i get the right drawing down. I believe that, in illustration, the right drawing/sketch is EVERYTHING. No matter what kind of master you at painting- digital or traditional, regardless of what sort of genius you are at color theory and technique, it can all be ruined with a bad sketch from the start, and it will show in the end.

The prep work and technical side of it that's a bitch also. but once it gets going though- its super relaxing. Sometimes it gets TOO relaxing that i get too lazy to jump back into telling a story and paneling pages again. for that, theres no warm up exercise besides watching tons of xfiles episodes and eating massive amounts of sunflower seeds and drinking iced tea. After a few years of working as a professional in comics, i've gotten to understand my own work habits and traits. basically, i had to find out wtf was wrong with me sometimes.

i don't yet, really have a certain process i follow each time, so I tried to stay within the same palette as the cover i will be painting next. this helps me keep the mixes clear in my head as well as the understanding of how certain colors react with one another on the paper.

hey party people, so nycc con is around the corner and this i will be the last of a few updates as i will be slowly stepping away from the computer. almost. got emails and stuff i guess.

most people look forward to the sketching, the shopping, the drinking, the hanging out with long time friends late at night... me? i am looking forward to sleeping in, sleeping uninterrupted. with 2 toddlers and working at home, anytime i can sleep for more than 3 hours straight is considered a vacation. going out to eat without having to get up to take someone else for potty breaks and telling someone to stop throwing their food? thats a bonus.

anyway, i'd like to just break down where i'll be in NYCC and what i'll have to slang for lunch money.

i will be in artist alley at table M3, next to Derek Fridolfs- M4, next to Sean Murphy-M5

ORIGINAL ART- between Derek Fridolfs and i, we shoudl have almost the complete run of Superman/ Batman up for grabs. i will also have some Wildcats, Batman, etc pages as well. prices are between $20-200.
PRINTS- i only sell them at cons and are $10 for glossy, $20 for matte/watercolor paper ones.
SKETCHBOOKS- the first batch of the 2008 will be available in NY, those are 25 bucks. (edited from 20, sorry! misstyped)

just wrapped up a cover for batman and had TONS of paint left over, mostly gray and blues, so i decided to jsut color up an old piece.

i did this in my sketchbook on the plane flying back from chicago 2 years ago. i remember my buddy Canete was saying something to the sort of how the drawing ( and myself) sucked but at least the gargoyles looked okay. : ( . i closed the book and pretended to sleep the rest of the flight home... while i was really crying.

i cried and hid it until now.

on an almost unrelated note- the Gargoyles animation to me was by FAR, one of the BEST animated series ever. i remember the OJ trials coming on and they'd interrupt Gargoyles to show the trials. i instantly felt he was guilty out of anger.

a cover i did for the upcoming supernatural comic series from Wildstorm. the original sketch was more of a night sky, darker. in the end, i wanted to go with soemthing brighter, more of a midwest open road- highway sky . i drove thru Tennessee once and it was gorgeous man.

im a huge fan of the show, so to get to do anythign for them is sweet. and i can throw in little bits of geekdom only the fans woudl notice.

alright, so i know i've posted pieces of this before, but i jsut got the posable colored prototype this past month and its so freakin cool i had to share.-

its a figure of batman in a metal armor from a book i did back in 2005 i think. issue # 630.

a year later, i did turnarounds for it. then we were fortunate enough to get Jonathan Matthews to sculpt it ( he sculpted some of the best DC has, one being the batman b&w statue by Mignola!)

then finally, prototypes back from overseas. the mask comes off and all! it even comes with TWO masks, one is scractched up like in the book. how freakin cool is that?

should be available this summer thru DC DIRECT!

i really thought i'd have time and wanted draw something fun for Halloween. all i really have had time for all month are short 5 minute sketches in between panels. so this is one of my favorite lines from the movie. i think it's everyone's favorite also. anyway, maybe for xmas i can find some time.
